A street that sells the past, photographed with a process from it.
Racks of vintage clothing set out along the sidewalk on Church Street in Lambertville, with a flag strung up in the tree and the shoppers moving through. The exposure runs long enough that anyone who moved has blurred, which is exactly what happened to passers-by in street photographs made in the 1860s.
Look at the lettering on the shopfront: it reads backwards. This is a direct plate, so the image is a mirror of the scene, the way every tintype has been since the 1850s.
The plate was coated, exposed and developed on the spot, within minutes, in a darkroom built into the back of a truck.
Photographed using the 19th-century wet plate collodion process, and reproduced here as a fine art giclée print that holds the tonal range and atmosphere of the original plate.
