The Updike Farmstead is one of the last working farm sites left in Princeton, and the windmill pumped its water long before rural electricity arrived. The tank still sits below the blades, and the barn beside it has weathered down to bare board.

The plate was coated, exposed and developed on location within minutes, in a darkroom built into the back of a truck. The blades held still long enough to come through sharp, which on a windy day is a matter of luck.

Photographed using the 19th-century wet plate collodion process, and reproduced here as a fine art giclée print that holds the tonal range and atmosphere of the original plate.
