This is the working heart of the Updike Farmstead, one of the last farm sites left in Princeton. The big barn stands to the right with its doors on rollers, a wagon shed sits open across the yard, and the smaller buildings run off behind. In winter you can see the whole arrangement, the way a farm was laid out to be used rather than looked at.

The plate was coated, exposed and developed on location within minutes, in a darkroom built into the back of a truck.

Photographed using the 19th-century wet plate collodion process, and reproduced here as a fine art giclée print that holds the tonal range and atmosphere of the original plate.
