Gothic arches opening onto a courtyard, with the whole run of them caught again in a puddle on the paving.

The carved shield sits above the centre arch, and each opening frames a different piece of the courtyard behind. Rain had left standing water across the foreground, which gave the plate a second version of the arches upside down beneath the first.

The plate was coated, exposed and developed on location within minutes, in a darkroom built into the back of a truck.

Photographed using the 19th-century wet plate collodion process, and reproduced here as a fine art giclée print that holds the tonal range and atmosphere of the original plate.
