Stone Barn in Winter — Delaware River Valley

A fieldstone barn standing over frozen ground, built long before the camera that photographed it.

Barns like this one are scattered along both sides of the Delaware, put up by farmers who used what the fields gave them. The stonework has been patched and repatched over two centuries, and the snow shows every dip and rut in the yard in front of it.

The plate was coated, exposed and developed on location within minutes, in a darkroom built into the back of a truck. Working in the cold slows the chemistry down, which is part of why winter plates look the way they do.

Photographed using the 19th-century wet plate collodion process, and reproduced here as a fine art giclée print that holds the tonal range and atmosphere of the original plate.
