The suspension footbridge links Lumberville, Pennsylvania with Bull's Island at Raven Rock, New Jersey. Its piers are far older than the span they carry, left from earlier crossings on the same line. It's one of the few places on the river where you can stand in the middle with no traffic at all.
The plate was coated, exposed and developed on location within minutes, in a darkroom built into the back of a truck. The pale sweep across the lower half is where the developer ran, left exactly as it came off the plate.
Photographed using the 19th-century wet plate collodion process, and reproduced here as a fine art giclée print that holds the tonal range and atmosphere of the original plate.
