The old railroad station on the canal, with the platform canopy running down toward the water.
Built in 1867 for the Belvidere Delaware Railroad, the stone station served the town until the trains stopped. It stands beside the feeder canal, and from this side the water holds the whole reflection of the trees along the bank.
The plate was coated, exposed and developed on location within minutes, in a darkroom built into the back of a truck. The station was already decades old when this process was still the ordinary way to make a photograph.
Photographed using the 19th-century wet plate collodion process, and reproduced here as a fine art giclée print that holds the tonal range and atmosphere of the original plate.
