Princeton's collegiate Gothic archways were built in the early twentieth century to look centuries older, and this one frames the courtyard the way it was designed to. The camera sat under the vault looking out, so the stone is dark and heavy overhead while the courtyard past it is full of light.

The plate was coated, exposed and developed on location within minutes, in a darkroom built into the back of a truck. Long exposures suit a place like this, since the stone holds still and nothing else has to.

Photographed using the 19th-century wet plate collodion process, and reproduced here as a fine art giclée print that holds the tonal range and atmosphere of the original plate.
