Final Destination — Lambertville, New Jersey

Inside an abandoned passenger car, the seats stripped to their frames and every surface written on.

The car has sat on the old line outside Lambertville long enough for the trees to close in at the windows. Graffiti runs the length of the ceiling, the floor is scattered with what's left of the interior, and the light comes in sideways through both rows of windows at once.

The plate was coated, exposed and developed on location within minutes, in a darkroom built into the back of a truck. Working inside a car like this means a long exposure, so the aisle holds sharp while the corners fall away.

Photographed using the 19th-century wet plate collodion process, and reproduced here as a fine art giclée print that holds the tonal range and atmosphere of the original plate.
