A quiet morning on the sidewalk, with the shopfronts open and nobody about yet.

Awnings, potted trees and a concrete deer outside the doorways, the street running away between the trees. The hanging sign reads backwards because this is a direct plate, a mirror of the scene, the way every tintype has been since the 1850s. It's the detail that tells you this isn't a filtered photograph.

The plate was coated, exposed and developed on the spot, within minutes, in a darkroom built into the back of a truck.

Photographed using the 19th-century wet plate collodion process, and reproduced here as a fine art giclée print that holds the tonal range and atmosphere of the original plate.
