Wrought iron and limestone, standing open onto the front campus.

The gate frames a bare sycamore and the stone buildings beyond it, with the lantern hanging in the ironwork above. Princeton's gates were built to be passed through in one direction at a time, and tradition still governs which way students walk them.

The plate was coated, exposed and developed on location within minutes, in a darkroom built into the back of a truck. Winter suits the process. The bare branches come through sharp, where summer leaves would have moved during the exposure.

Photographed using the 19th-century wet plate collodion process, and reproduced here as a fine art giclée print that holds the tonal range and atmosphere of the original plate.
