A shoreline built entirely of stones the sea has been rounding for thousands of years.
This image was made at Boulder Beach in Acadia National Park, Maine, where granite cliffs meet a cove filled with cobbles instead of sand. The long exposure smooths the incoming water to mist while holding the hard edges of the rock and the spruce on the ridge above.
The plate was coated, exposed and developed on location within minutes, in a darkroom built into the back of a truck. The marks along the edges are the pour lines, left exactly as they came off the plate.
Photographed using the 19th-century wet plate collodion process, and reproduced here as a fine art giclée print that holds the tonal range and atmosphere of the original plate.
